About the Thanksgiving Day holiday:
While there are a lot of myths surrounding the Thanksgiving holiday, the public holiday that we celebrate owes its origins to the American Civil War and Abraham Lincoln. There had been many declarations of Thanksgiving before the war, but they were temporary of occasional events. In 1863, America was in the height of war with things still very much in doubt. While the Union had scored great victories at Gettysburg and Vicksburg, things were still very much in doubt. Southern forces still held Atlanta, Richmond was still strong, and the army of Robert E. Lee was still at-large. Abraham Lincoln saw the need for a public Thanksgiving to draw the war-weary nation together. And from that moment on, our nation has celebrated a Thanksgiving holiday, to remind us to be grateful for the many blessings that we have experienced.
